West Ham boss sends Aaron Wan-Bissaka brutal message ahead of Man United reunion

by · Manchester Evening News

West Ham United manager Julen Lopetegui believes former Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka still has areas of his game to improve ahead of his reunion with the Reds on Sunday.

Wan-Bissaka was sold for £15m in the summer transfer window after slipping down the pecking order behind Diogo Dalot. To replace him, Erik ten Hag splashed £17.2m on Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui who was utilised as an attacking midfielder on Thursday night in the draw with Fenerbahce.

Since moving to the London Stadium, Wan-Bissaka has become a first-team regular for Lopetegui albeit his performance in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend left a lot to be desired. Ahead of the reunion with his old teammates at United, Wan-Bissaka was a topic of conversation in the pre-match press conference.

Speaking on the full-back, Lopetegui admitted there was still room for improvement. "He needs to develop things," the Irons boss insisted.

"Adaptation is always important in a new club. He's trying to do it quickly.

"But he has to improve things too. He knows.

"We’re trying to help him to find his level as soon as possible but he is working well." Sunday is a big afternoon not just for Wan-Bissaka and West Ham but Erik ten Hag too.

The Reds sit 12th in the Premier League prior to the trip to West Ham. Last weekend's victory over Brentford at Old Trafford eased some of the fears Ten Hag had over his job security but continued good performances and results will be needed to keep the critics at bay.
