Coronation Street fans address David Platt home confusion as actor admits 'doubt'

by · Manchester Evening News

Coronation Street fans have been trying to get to the bottom of why David Platt is having to potentially buy the home he is currently living in as his mum decided to sell up.

Those who follow the ITV soap know that the Platt matriarch will soon be leaving the cobbles behind. How Gail comes to exit her home of five decades remains to be seen, but the scenes will air before the end of the year after acting legend Helen Worth decided to step back from her long-running role.

Earlier this month, Corrie viewers saw David breaking the news to his wife Shona that Gail’s taken out a bridging loan to pay for Bethany's medevac flight home from Turkey after her surgery horror and she's now committed to selling the house.

David has since been trying to find the money to be able to buy the house himself, making a deal with Gail to give him time before she looks for another buyer. But in typical Gail fashion, she didn't listen and David was furious to find a 'for sale' board outside the family home before Carla Connor popped round with Ryan for a viewing.

And it appears David is desperate as during Monday night's Corrie (October 21) it was revealed that he was the one who stole Damon Hay's cash, which he offered to his ex Sarah, David's sister, telling her he had some hidden cash he wanted her to have to help with Bethany's medical bills.

It was at the end of the latest episode that David was seen panicked to find Lily rummaging through the cupboard under the stairs. He asked her what she was doing, trying to get her to go away. It's then that we saw him searching for something himself, before opening a bag that was full of cash.

With it seemingly confirmed he is behind the theft that left his sister and niece in danger as one of Harvey Gaskell's thugs broke into their flat, Corrie fans couldn't help but share their confusion over David's living arrangements as they were under the impression he owened the house.

However, it was back in February 2021 that David was first seen in a bid to buy back his childhood home after it was snatched away. David entered a furious bidding war alongside neighbour Tracy Barlow to buy 8 Coronation Street at an auction, and he was fuming when he lost out.

At the time David, who was conned into giving up his house by scheming entrepreneur Ray Crosby, was shocked to find out that the final bid had been placed by a mystery buyer. When a light was spotted on in the house David, Tracy and his wife Shona went to investigate in hilarious soap scenes.

David was stunned to discover that the buyer was none other than his mum Gail, who had continued to live there since her son became the owner in 2013.

Meanwhile, David actor Jack P Shepherd has spoken about how his character will react following his mum's exit and whether he'll became the new head of the family and be the 'glue' that holds the Platts together. "No, I doubt that very much!" the soap star admitted.

"I don't think he'll become the glue, I think if anyone that's going to have to be Sarah, it will be the middle child's responsibility, as it is in every family. I think Nick will have his own thing, and he'll bob in, bob out whenever needed. But ultimately, he's got the bistro. He's got loads of problems with Leanne and Toyah.

"So he'll have his own world to worry about. The thing is for David there is a lot more stuff going on than his mum meeting a new man and talking about leaving Weatherfield and that is all about to start unravelling. He and Shona are about to be tested and of course he has the secret about Damon’s money so I think he might have too much on his plate. Sarah is always the one that ends up trying to pull everyone together and imagine it will fall to her again."
