A major Hollywood actor has seemingly come out of retirement after they were seen filming scenes in Manchester this weekend.

Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who is known for appearing in films including My Left Foot, Gangs of New York and Lincoln, was spotted in the Northern Quarter on Sunday (September 29).

The star, who publicly retired from acting in 2017, was seen filming scenes for upcoming movie Avelyn alongside co-star Sean Bean on Lever Street. Day-Lewis last appeared on our screens in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film Phantom Thread, where he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Little is known about the forthcoming movie, but it has been reported that the film is set in the ‘80s and will see Bean, who has appeared in films including The Lord of The Rings as well as TV shows like Game of Thrones, take on the role of a former soldier.

In photos taken as the two stars were filming scenes, the actors can be seen riding on a retro Honda Africa Twin motorbike - with Bean sat at the back whilst wearing the same blue and black biker outfit the star was previously wearing in previous paparazzi shots.

Looking almost unrecognisable whilst sporting a well-trimmed moustache, Day-Lewis, 65, was snapped wearing an olive green bomber jacket with black pants, brown boots and black gloves. In addition to a white safety helmet, he was also wearing gold-rimmed glasses.

Throughout his career, Day-Lewis has won three Best Actor Oscars thanks to his performances in 1989's My Left Foot, 2007's There Will Be Blood and 2012's Lincoln. He has also won four BAFTAs for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the same three films, alongside 2002's Scorsese flick Gangs of New York.

From 1997 to 2000, the actor retired from acting where he worked as an apprentice shoe-maker in Italy. The actor, who was born and raised in London, returned to filming until June 2017 when he announced he was retiring once again.

At the time, Day-Lewis’ agent said he "will no longer be working as an actor” and was "immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences".
