Liam Payne's heartbreaking comments about 'hitting rock bottom' have resurfaced in the wake of his tragic death. The former One Direction has died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.

He was enjoying a holiday in Argentina alongside his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, with the pair attending Payne's former bandmate Niall Horan's gig in the country earlier this month.

Local police said the 31-year-old singer fell from the third floor into the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel in the Palermo neighbourhood of Argentina’s capital, before medics confirmed his death.

The Foreign Office confirmed it is in contact with authorities in Argentina “regarding reports of the death of a British man”. But a spokesman declined to comment any further, including on the identity of the man involved.

Speaking in 2021 on Steven Bartlett’s Diary of an CEO podcast, Liam made a tragic remark about hitting rock bottom, with his revisited words shocking fans in the wake of his death.

Speaking to entrepreneur and Dragons' Den star Steven, father-of-one Liam said at the time: "I don’t know if I’ve even hit rock bottom yet. It feels like I can either pick my last moment as my rock bottom, or make a whole new low. That’s my choice."

Also speaking about his journey to sobriety, Payne, who was 29 at the time, revealed: "There is a point when you hit rock bottom and you realise you have got to do something different as whatever you are doing right now isn’t working for you.

"I was in bad shape up until that point. Honestly, more than anything I want to say thank you to Bear and his mum for giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well. There is no point trying to be a dad when you have nothing to teach."

The singer went on to say he had found solace in art and poetry and that he felt like he had a "grip on life". It comes as friend Ant Middleton described how Liam loved painting and was "incredible" at painting and drawing and wanted to get into that but was "jumping" from things.

"There was talk always of getting the boy band back together and when there was talk of that he lit up, his face lit up - that really was his belonging and I believe his safe haven," the ex SAS: Who Dares Wins star, who formed a close bond with the dad of one, 31, during show Straight Talking, released in 2019, said on Good Morning Britain on Thursday (October 17).
