Manchester trains cancelled and delayed as major disruption enters second day

by · Manchester Evening News

Major disruption to some trains in Greater Manchester is continuing for a second day today.

The disruption began yesterday (Friday) due to damage to the overhead lines between Stockport and Levenshulme. Network Rail engineers worked on the scene throughout much of the day, with lines also fully closed off overnight so repairs could be carried out on the cables.

This morning (Saturday), all lines running through Stockport station remain disrupted. Services will either cancelled, delayed or diverted.

According to National Rail, the disruption is expected to last until at least 10am this morning. Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Northern, TransPennine Express and Transport for Wales services are all affected.

One of the main routes affected by the issue is the Avanti route between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston. Throughout yesterday, many of these services were either delayed or cancelled.

The TransPennine Express route between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield is also affected by the problem. National Rail said this morning: "Damage to the overhead wires at Stockport means that all lines are currently disrupted.

"As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or diverted. Disruption is expected until 10:00."

In a post on X this morning, Avanti said: "Due to damage to the overhead electric wires at Stockport, some lines are blocked. Trains running through this station may be cancelled, diverted or delayed.

"Please check your journey. Ticket acceptance has been agreed with @CrossCountryUK who are conveying passengers between Stafford and Manchester Piccadilly in both directions until further notice."

TransPennine Express said: "Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between #ManchesterPiccadilly and #Sheffield trains have to run at reduced speed on some lines. Disruption is expected until 10:00.

"TransPennine Express and @EastMidRailway tickets will be accepted on either services between #LiverpoolLimeStreet and #Sheffield in both directions until 10am due to this disruption today."

Yesterday afternoon, a spokesperson for Network Rail said: "Damage to overhead lines between Levenshulme and Stockport are causing some delays as trains are having to take a diversionary route. No trains will run overnight between Levenshulme and Stockport to allow repair teams to investigate the cause and fix the cables.

"Services are expected to be back up and running by the morning. We advise passengers to check before they travel and apologise for any disruption caused."
