VIGILS FOR THE One Direction singer Liam Payne have continued over the weekend after his death in fall from a hotel room balcony in Argentina.

There was a gathering of Directioners, the name given to followers of The X Factor-formed boy band, at the Keel Wharf Bridge at Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool today.

The fans wrote messages in tribute to the singer, 31, who died on Wednesday.

One memorial card said Forever Young, a nod to the Alphaville track of the same name that One Direction covered, but did not formally release as a single.

Fans lit candles and had carboard signs with the band’s lyrics on them, including one saying “I’m missing half of me when we’re apart”, from the single If I Could Fly by One Direction.

Photographs of Payne, flowers, teddy bears and balloons were left at the bridge, and the group sang One Direction songs.

Argentina’s National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office No 16 said it was investigating the incident at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires as an “inconclusive death”.

Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, travelled to the Argentinian capital yesterday to arrange the repatriation of his son’s body.

Yesterday, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl said the death of her former partner Liam Payne is “breaking my heart” as she criticised “abhorrent reports and media exploitation” in the wake of his passing.

The singer shares a seven-year-old son, Bear, with Payne.

Tributes continue

Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes paused his concert to pay tribute to the late One Direction singer Liam Payne.

Payne died aged 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

Mendes was performing at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre in New York, US, on Friday, when he told the audience that the news was “devastating”.

He added: “I got to meet Liam a couple of times and he was a beautiful soul and his eyes gleamed, it was beautiful.

“It’s about grieving those we miss, the tears, and it’s also about celebrating them and who they were and what they left in this world and I just want to take a second to send so much love to him wherever he is up there.

“Liam, we love you. The world is crying for you brother, and we’re all praying for your son and your family and I miss you man. So this one’s for you tonight, Liam, from all of us.”

He then performed his new song Heart Of Gold, appearing to dedicate it to Payne, which watching fan Kristal Terrell said: “I can honestly say that there wasn’t a dry eye around me.”
