Man arrested in relation to murder of an inmate at Cloverhill Prison released without charge

A MAN ARRESTED yesterday morning in relation to the murder of an inmate at Cloverhill Prison in Dublin has been released without charge.

Martin Salinger, from Ballyfermot in Dublin, was found fatally injured in a cell in the early hours of Saturday after prison officers responded to a disturbance.

Shortly after 5:30am, gardaí and emergency services were alerted to this incident by prison authorities within Cloverhill.

Salinger received treatment from emergency services but was pronounced dead a short time later.

It is understood that the deceased was attacked with a makeshift weapon inside the prison.

A man in his 30s was arrested yesterday on suspicion of the murder of a fellow inmate but has since been released without charge.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and a garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.

A Garda Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Irish Prison Service said all deaths in custody are also investigated by the office of the Inspector of Prisons.

A spokesperson added that the Irish Prison Service “wish to express our condolences to the deceased’s family and friends”.

As of Thursday, Cloverhill Prison was operating at 121% of bed capacity, with 522 people in custody at the prison that has a bed capacity of 433.
