People planning a trip to Turkey should brace themselves for extended security procedures, after the country fell victim to a terrorist attack this week. The country is popular with travellers from the UK thanks to its seaside resorts and city break destinations.

However, tragedy struck this week when a local aerospace firm in Kahramankazan, about 40km from the capital of Ankara, was the site of a deadly assault on Wednesday (October 23). The Turkish government confirmed the death of five individuals with another 22 wounded in the incident. The two attackers were also killed.

Following the event, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advised British citizens in the vicinity on Thursday to adhere to guidance from local authorities and stay updated via media outlets. An additional notification by the FCDO later on Thursday warns travellers about enhanced airport security checks.

The alert on Gov.uk reads: "While the incident has ended, the response is ongoing, including increased security measures at Turkish airports, which means security checks will take longer than normal. If you are in the area near the attack, follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local media."

Located to the north west of Turkey, Kahramankazan sits a considerable distance from popular tourist regions such as the coastal areas and the cities of Istanbul to the west and Antalya to the southwest.
