Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with serious injuries following an assault at Derry's Cross in the early hours of Sunday.

The man, aged in his 30s, suffered a single punch to his head but then received more serious injuries when he fell and his head struck the pavement at the side of the nightclub Revolution, near the zebra crossing, at around 2am on October 20.

The incident is reported to have involved a number of males at the scene, some of whom had previously been ejected from the venue. Shortly prior to the incident, a woman was allegedly pushed over and a man verbally remonstrated with the group of young men.

The man was allegedly punched once to the jaw and collapsed - apparently unconscious - to the ground where it is reported his head cracked against the pavement.

He was treated at the scene by door staff from the Revolution club and paramedics before being taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

Investigators have said the man is currently in a stable condition but has suffered what has been described as "significant head injuries". He remains in hospital at this time.

Officers who attended the scene later arrested three men - aged 20, 22 and 24 - on suspicion of wounding without intent and a fourth man, said to be 23-years of age, remains outstanding.

A police spokesperson said: "The man suffered what was initially considered life-threatening injuries but thankfully his condition is now deemed stable by medical staff at Derriford Hospital.

"There were a large number of people in the area at the time. We want to hear from anyone who saw any part of the incident and can assist us with our ongoing inquiries."
