Coronation Street's Betsy's real mother 'exposed' in DNA twist - and she's a past soap icon

Coronation Street fans are convinced they've worked out who Betsy Swain's real mother is - and it's not DS Lisa Swain

Coronation Street enthusiasts believe they've figured out the 'true' identity of Betsy Swain's mother - and it's not DS Lisa Swain.

The character, portrayed by Sydney Martin, arrived on the scene earlier this year as the offspring of DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers). It was disclosed that Lisa's spouse and Betsy's mother, Becky, had tragically passed away while on duty, resulting in a tense relationship between Betsy and Lisa.

Betsy hasn't wasted any time stirring up trouble. She found herself entangled with the sinister solicitor Joel Deering (Calum Lill), who she blackmailed before he threatened her, leaving her terrified.

Viewers will remember that Joel is guilty of grooming and abusing young girls, including Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) who disappeared. Lauren eventually came back, revealing Joel's 'true' nature to the community.

However, despite being sentenced to jail for his appalling actions, Joel disappeared from Weatherfield last week. This week, the police, led by Lisa Swain, concluded that Joel had taken his own life, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Moreover, during Monday's episode (October 7), Lisa discovered the disgusting messages exchanged between Betsy and Joel - with Joel threatening to end the teenager's life. However, viewers are now convinced that neither Lisa Swain nor Becky are Betsy's biological mother.

In an unexpected turn of events, fans speculate that her real mother is a former beloved character from the cobbles. Corrie enthusiasts have been airing their thoughts online, with one user on a Corrie Facebook fan page posing the question: "Is DS Swain Betsy's biological mum."

To which another replied: "No, Becky McDonald!!" Long-time viewers will fondly recall Katherine Kelly's portrayal of Becky from her memorable tenure between 2006 and 2012. She arrived on the Street where Roy Cropper (David Neilson) and his wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) became her supportive figures.

Throughout her years in Weatherfield, Becky was central to a number of high-octane storylines. Her life was peppered with scandal, spanning love affairs to long-standing feuds, guaranteeing that her stay was anything but dull.

Yet the sadness was palpable when she decided to bid farewell to the soap in 2012, after creating waves for six years. The theory about Becky's potential link seemed to resonate with other fans as well. A comment from another fan echoed the sentiment: "I've said it all along... 'Becky' is actually Becky McDonald.
