Emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle collision Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the intersection of Benvoulin Road and Cooper Road.

The vehicles collided after a vehicle merging southbound from Cooper onto Benvoulin failed to yield to another vehicle already travelling southbound on Benvoulin.

"The merging vehicle forced the other vehicle onto the median in order to avoid (a) collision where it came into contact with a light standard followed by the merging vehicle," says RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Michael Gauthier.

A woman who lives near the intersection tells Castanet she heard a loud noise and then saw flashing lights outside when she decided to go and take a look.

"I went downstairs, and the lamppost was knocked over. There was a car that was damaged and then there was a separate car where the airbag had deployed," Sharyn Morton said.

The light standard remains down and is now covered by police tape.

Morton says this is not the first time there has been a serious collision at that intersection.

"I know this has happened before, I can't remember if it was a year or two ago, but it was the same location. They go zipping down that road late at night, I remember they knocked over another lamppost and the car had flipped over," says Morton.

There is no word on injuries as a result of Tuesday night collision.
