Well, it appears that Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story may not be quite the same level of hit that Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was for Netflix. While it was at the #1 spot in Netflix’s top 10 list for over a week, it has now been dethroned by a new, far better series, the romantic comedy Nobody Wants This.

Nobody Wants This arrived at #2 and now has instantly surged to #1. The romantic comedy series starring The OC’s Adam Brody and The Good Place’s Kristen Bell has gotten extremely excellent reviews, a 93% critic scores and an 88% audience score so far, and given that it does not appear to be a miniseries, it’s angling for a season 2 that it will probably receive. Here’s the official synopsis of the show:

“An agnostic sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi fall in love; discovering if their relationship survive their wildly different lives and meddling families.”

Having watched the five few episodes, I can say that it is very charming and Adam Brody has not lost a step despite selectively picking roles the last 20 years since his amazing turn as Seth Cohen. Kristen Bell has been in a nonstop parade of hits over the years and this is just her latest. I am not surprised this is doing so well and I’m glad to see it unseat the not-good Lyle and Menendez Story.

That show has received relatively poor ratings from critics and audiences, and has drawn massive pushback from the Menendez family and the brothers themselves. But given how popular the Monster series is, Ryan Murphy and Netflix are already pushing ahead with the next entry which will star Charlie Hunnam as famed serial killer Ed Gein, who in the 50s with his wild killings and use of body parts became the inspiration for famed movie killers from Norman Bates to Buffalo Bill. Given that Gein has been dead for years and his murders were 60 years ago, perhaps this will be somewhat less controversial.

The rest of the list includes The Perfect Couple dropping to #5 after staying at #1 for a long while. Ellen DeGeneres now-infamous comedy special never reached #1 and is now #6. Emily in Paris is still hanging on at #7.

But yes, I would absolutely recommend Nobody Wants This, even after just watching the first few episodes. It’s funny and heartwarming with a great cast, and Netflix has found a true hit here.
