Terrifier 3—a shock horror thriller featuring the murderous Art the Clown—is poised for a big opening at the box office—but will its success translate to the production of a Terrifier 4?

Damien Leone—who wrote and directed the first three films in the series—kicked off the horror film phenomenon in 2016’s Terrifier, starring David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown.

According to The Numbers, Terrifier made $342,749 at the worldwide box office against a $35,000 production budget before prints and advertising.

The series grew exponentially from there, as the 2022 sequel Terrifier 2, per the box office tracker, made $15.7 million worldwide against a $250,000 budget before P&A.

Terrifier 3, not surprisingly, has a much bigger budget, which will be a factor when it comes to the idea of a Terrifier 4.

Rumblings About ‘Terrifier 4’ Began In September

The official logline for Terrifer 3 reads, “After surviving Art the Clown's Halloween massacre, Sienna (Lauren LeVera) and her brother are struggling to rebuild their shattered lives. As the holiday season approaches, they try to embrace the Christmas spirit and leave the horrors of the past behind.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, speculation about Terrifier 4 began to heat up after Terrifier 3’s world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, when Damien Leone teased a fourth film during a Q&A session.

In a recent interview with THR, Leone said the production of a Terrifer 4, though largely depends on how audiences receive the film.

“I didn’t want that news to come out all of a sudden: ‘Terrifier 4 is happening!’” Leone told THR. “I have a lot of [Terrifier 4] blueprinted now, and depending on how Terrifier 3 does and if it continues to get a good reception and people really want the next one, then that could be something I dive into right away.”

In addition, Leone told Variety in a recent interview that he can’t get into details about what he has planned for Terrifier 4. He did note, however, “Some really, really crazy things will happen in the next one.”

While the reception of Terrifier 3 at the box office won’t be fully determined until the end of its first Friday-Sunday frame, everything seems to be falling into place for Leone to make Terrifier 4.

According to The Numbers, Terrifier 3 had a production budget of $2 million before P&A, but the film had already made that amount back in Thursday previews. Even more promising are the domestic box office projections for the film and positive reviews from critics.

Deadline, for example, is projecting Terrifier 3 to make $11 million in its opening weekend in 2,514 North American theaters, noting that the tally may be enough to knock last week’s No. 1 movie Joker: Folie à Deux off its box office perch.

As for a potential turnaround time for Terrifier 4, THR asked Leone if it would be too much pressure to ready the film for an October 2025 release.

“Don’t be surprised! It might happen,” Leone told THR.

Terrifier 3 opens Friday in theaters nationwide.
