MaXXXine—the final film in Mia Goth and Ti West’s X horror movie trilogy—debuts on streaming on Max this week.

Goth and writer-director West kicked off the X trilogy in 2022 with the release of X, which was followed by Pearl.

MaXXXine—an A24 film that opened in theaters on July 5—stars Goth as Maxine Minx, a porn star and peep show performer in Los Angeles in 1985 who finally breaks into the mainstream when director Elizabeth Bender (The Crown 2024 Emmy winner Elizabeth Debicki) casts her in the horror film Puritan II.

The timing of Maxine’s big break isn’t the greatest, however. The real-life serial killer the Night Stalker is terrorizing LA, and once people close to Maxine are brutally murdered, she becomes targeted by a pair of LA detectives (Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Cannavale).

Worse yet, a seedy private eye (Kevin Bacon) starts invading Maxine’s personal space and threatens to expose her murderous past.

MaXXXine also stars Giancarlo Esposito, Moses Sumney, Halsey and Lily Collins.

Debicki Says She Was ‘Mesmerized’ By ‘X’ And ‘Pearl’

Elizabeth Debicki, who plays a key role in MaXXXine, said in a Zoom conversation that she had no idea why Ti West called her to star opposite Mia Goth in the film, but she was happy to accept the gig despite the fact that she hadn’t seen either X or Pearl.

Of course, part of Debicki’s homework for her role in MaXXXine included watching both of the acclaimed horror movies and she was stunned by both of them.

“They’re radical films that do something really interesting in the genre. I was delighted by what I found because it’s such performance-driven horror,” Debicki said. “It’s incredibly intelligent about how they use the tropes of the genre but they’re not films about scaring people. They’re films about a woman and how her inner psychological blueprint is being explored all of the time.

“I love films like that. I love films about women. I seek them out,” Debicki added. “So, I’m so glad my role in MaXXXine prompted me to watch X and Pearl. I was completely mesmerized by both of them. They’re so unusual and really enjoyable and I didn’t think that I’d feel that way.”

According to The Numbers, MaXXXine earned nearly $15.1 million domestically and $6.3 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $21.4 million. Per IMDb, MaXXXine had a production budget of $1 million before prints and advertising.

Rotten Tomatoes critics collectively gave MaXXXine a 72% “fresh” rating based on 276 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “Intoxicating with its maxxximal style, MaXXXine is an uneven but vibrant pastiche that drives a stiletto through Hollywood's heart.”

In addition, MaXXXine earned a 77% “fresh” Audience Score based on 500-plus viewer ratings.

Rated R, MaXXXine is also available on digital streaming via premium video on demand. The film debuts on Max on Friday.
