Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti explained a confrontation with FC Barcelona Hansi Flick's bench after the Catalans thumped his men in El Clasico on Saturday.

Barca now boasts a six-point cushion at the top of La Liga after thrashing its bitter rivals 0-4 at the Bernabeu.

For Ancelotti, however, the sides were evenly matched until the goals started rolling in for the visitors with Madrid finally playing with the intensity he has long craved while capable of hitting the back of the net.

"When they scored, that took away all our energy and it was another game. We took risks and had a lot of one-on-ones," Ancelotti said.

"I liked the first half. It is a difficult moment and we have to keep fighting and fighting. The team competed well in the first 60 minutes. The season is very long, we must not give up but learn. We did it last time and now we will do the same to try to come back and compete. The season is very long. I don't think it's serious to throw everything in the trash," Ancelotti insisted.

With Madrid caught offside 12 times, Ancelotti lamented not being able to take advantage of Barca's high defensive line with Mbappe netting twice but having his efforts ruled out.

"He had chances to score. He was offside several times but it's normal with this line so far forward," Ancelotti noted.

Ancelotti was involved in a frank exchange of views with the Barca bench at one point at the mauling, and had words with Flick both after the incident and at full time.

Asked to shed light on the row, Ancelotti explained that "something happened with the assistant, not with Flick".

"He wasn't a gentleman when celebrating and I told Flick that I did not agree."

Losing its unbeaten record at the Bernabeu, Madrid will now have to dust itself off and try and get back on the horse.

Valencia are next up away at the Mestalla next Saturday, a few days before Ancelotti hosts his former club AC Milan in the Champions League.
