The Dallas Cowboys are trying to stay afloat in the NFC Playoff picture at 3-4, but the NFL franchise got horrible injury news ahead of its Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Speaking with 105.3 The Fan on Friday, team owner Jerry Jones revealed star cornerback Trevon Diggs has an injury, calling it a “tear” in his calf.

Todd Archer of ESPN shared the news on social media. Then later in the day he also shared head coach Mike McCarthy telling reporters that Diggs will be a true “gametime decision” after he goes through warmups.

This injury comes at a truly difficult time for the Cowboys, who are set to go through a four-game stretch that could either save, or tank their season. Needless to say, this is a significant development for “America’s Team.”

Trevon Diggs’ Stats Show He Is The Anchor Of The Cowboys Secondary

In a season that has been defined by injuries, busted expectations, and poor play, Diggs has been one of the more consistent and effective players on the Cowboys’ struggling defense.

Diggs has yet to miss a game, playing significant snaps in each of Dallas’ eight games thus far in 2024. Midway through the campaign, he’s kept opposing quarterbacks under a 72.1 passer rating in all but three games, tallying 28 tackles, one interception, and four passes defensed while allowing just one touchdown in coverage.

Tasked with keeping the right side of the perimeter locked down, Diggs has aligned as the right side cornerback on 82 percent of Dallas’ snaps, per Next Gen Stats. It will be difficult for the Cowboys to replace him if Diggs has to miss time with his calf injury.

Cowboys Injury Report Still Includes Micah Parsons And DaRon Bland

DaRon Bland was recently taken off the team’s injured reserve list, but head coach Mike McCarthy has indicated the cornerback is still not ready for a return to action.

Even worse, Dallas has the red-hot Falcons offense coming to town this weekend. It may be up to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb Sunday, more than ever before, to pick up the slack.

The Cowboys are already without star pass rusher Micah Parsons, who’s missed three games with an ankle sprain. If they can’t field Diggs on Sunday, it could get very ugly for Mike Zimmer’s defense.
