A late Saturday shooting in Birmingham, Ala., left at least four dead and several more people injured in a heavily populated area.

The incident, which occurred at about 11 p.m. local time, left three victims dead at the scene, while a fourth victim died at a local hospital and 18 more gunshot victims had been identified by 7 a.m. EDT, according to Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald.

At least four of the hospitalized victims have life-threatening injuries, according to CNN.

“The shooting was not random and stemmed from an isolated incident where multiple victims were caught in the crossfire,” wrote Fitzgerald.

Police believe “multiple” people opened fire and no suspects are in custody.

Authorities have yet to determine who the intended target, or targets, of the shooting were.

This is the third mass gun murder, defined as a mass shooting with four or more fatalities, in Birmingham this year, including a July 13 shooting at a nightclub that left four dead and a Feb. 16 shooting at a car wash. Birmingham is Alabama’s second-largest city.
