The new documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is soaring to extraordinary heights with critics.

The Warner Bros.-produced documentary is playing in theaters in a special engagement via Fathom events on September 21 and 25 only.

Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the logline for Super/Man notes, “Reeve's rise to becoming a film star, follows with a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After which he became an activist for spinal cord injury treatments and disability rights.”

Reeve, of course, played Clark Kent/Superman in four Warner Bros. films featuring the Man of Steel from 1978 to 1987. In addition, Reeve starred in such classic films as Somewhere in Time opposite Jane Seymour and Street Smart alongside Morgan Freeman.

Per Warner Bros., Super/Man will include never-before-seen home movies featuring Reeve, “as well as the first extended interviews ever filmed with Reeve’s three children about their father.” Also featured in the documentary are interviews with Reeve’s colleagues and friends, as well as archived interview footage featuring Reeve’s close friend, the late Robin Williams.

As of Thursday, Super/Man had a perfect 100% fresh score from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 23 reviews.

The RT Critics’ Consensus for the film reads, “An affectionate retrospective on Christopher Reeve's bravery and heroism in his own personal life, Super/Man takes to the skies in inspirational uplift.”

What Are Individual Critics Saying About ‘Super/Man’?

Among the individual reviews of Super/Man on RT is Time Out’s Ed Gibbs, who writes, “What the film does exceptionally well, above all else, is to portray the Man of Steel as a fallible family guy – an immensely gifted and passionate actor, activist, father and husband, who wanted to do the right thing, and ultimately did.”

In addition, David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter calls Super/Man “a powerful story of human endurance,” while Variety’s Owen Gleiberman notes how it “is a moving, wrenching, compellingly well-made documentary about Reeve’s life that inevitably ends up centering on his accident and its aftermath.”

Meanwhile, Awards Daily critic Mark Johnson summarized Super/Man by writing, “The film grapples with the question: What defines a hero? For Reeve, it was someone who found strength to persevere despite overwhelming obstacles. To me, it was simply Christopher Reeve.”

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will play in theaters nationwide via Fathom Events on September 21 and 25.
