The Reds and the Seagulls meet again after five-goal midweek thriller

Liverpool face Brighton and Hove Albion again on Saturday just a few days on from their midweek EFL Cup encounter which finished 3-2 to the Reds but this time the two sides are in Premier League action. Arne Slot's men are into the quarterfinals thanks to that victory over Fabian Hurzeler's side but a draw with Arsenal last weekend means that Liverpool have been overtaken at the EPL summit by Manchester City while Brighton conceded two late goals against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Although and EFL Cup exit is generally not regarded as too much of a disappointment by the bigger clubs, the Reds are defending champions and chasing a record 11th title in the competition. Cody Gakpo scored twice while Luis Diaz also got involved to better Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey's goals and earn a final-eight meeting with Southampton.

Before that, there are UEFA Champions League meetings with Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid in the coming weeks. Danny Welbeck and Evan Ferguson goals looked to have secured a Seagulls win over Wolves before Gary O'Neil's team hit back through Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha. That denied Brighton a third consecutive Premier League win as well as a place in the top four with Aston Villa also drawing.

Season so far

City now lead the EPL standings ahead of Liverpool after last week's draw with Arsenal although top spot is within reach if the Reds can better Pep Guardiola's men and their result against Bournemouth. Slot has only seen his team lose once at home to Nottingham Forest back in September and a four-game winning run at Anfield includes Chelsea, Bologna, West Ham United and the Cherries. Brighton's sixth-placed ranking is merited and their last seven games have totaled 30 goals with an average of over four per game. In those seven games, the Seagulls have both scored and conceded at least twice on six occasions and Wednesday's defeat was just their third loss in 10 outings against Liverpool.

Team news

Liverpool: Conor Bradley emerged unscathed in midweek but Harvey Elliott, Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa and Alisson Becker remain out of action. Slot is unlikely to get any of the injured quartet back before the international break. The Dutch tactician rotated in midweek and will recall Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Darwin Nunez and Alexis Mac Allister to his starting XI but Kostas Tsimikas could challenge Andy Robertson for a starting role.

Prediction

This one should be a Reds win again with the Seagulls missing too many important figures to hope to keep the hosts at bay while scoring enough goals to win this one. A draw would not be unrealistic but a home win is the most probable outcome by a narrow margin. Pick: Liverpool 2, Brighton 1.
