This $50 DIY kit lets you add an OLED screen to the Nintendo Switch Lite

Four years after launching the Nintendo Switch game console, Nintendo introduced the Switch OLED with a higher-quality display. But the company hasn’t gotten around to offering an OLED version of the cheaper Nintendo Switch Lite… and with a Switch 2 expected to arrive next year, it’s unlikely that we ever will see s Switch Lite OLED… at least not officially.

But if you’re willing to perform a little surgery, soon you’ll be able to buy a third-party OLED display kit called SUPER5 OLED. YouTubers Taki Udon says SUPER5 OLED kits will be available starting September 26th.

Prices start at $50 for a standard Super5 OLED with a 720p OLED display with up to 600 nits brightness, 150% sRGB color gamut, and a 600,000:1 contrast ratio. Note that you’ll lose access to the touchscreen if you opt for this entry-level package, but you can also pay a little extra for a touchscreen version or kit that includes a SUPER5 HDMI mod, allowing you to add an HDMI port to the Switch Lite for gaming on an external display.

Taki Udon says that sometime in November there’ll be an option to buy a version of the $50 non-touch display that’s compatible with the stock Switch Lite touch panel though, offering a cheaper option for folks that want to add an OLED display and keep touchscreen support.

Since these are DIY upgrade kits, you’ll need to open your Switch Lite to install the screen, and may risk voiding your warranty. But each kit comes with everything you need to perform the modifications, including prying tools, a suction cup, tweezers, and a screwdriver.

And for folks who’d rather pay even more for the simplest version of the kit can opt for a $110 Super5 HDMI Mega Kit that’s basically a pre-assembled replacement shell for the Nintendo Switch Lite that includes a touchscreen OLED display, the HDMI mod, a frame, shell, hall effect joysticks, buttons, and a battery. Basically all you need to do is remove the mainboard from an original Nintendo Switch Lite and slot it into the Super5 frame with this version of the upgrade kit.
