A huge police presence remains in Glasgow after a woman found seriously injured on a street near the city centre passed away. Officers raced to St Mungo Avenue in the city's Townhead after receiving reports of a disturbance at 1.55pm on Tuesday.
Ambulance crews attended but the woman was sadly pronounced dead a short time later. Local residents have told how dozens of officers swooped on the scene after the alarm was raised, with a huge cordon thrown up.
The incident happened in broad daylight while the area near the City of Glasgow College was busy with students on their lunch break. One resident, who lives in Townhead, told the Record: "It's a terrible shock. My friend lives in one of the flats within the cordon and she was told she wasn't allowed to leave her home.
"I have a friend who parked in the area within the cordon too and she's still not been able to get into her car. I've never seen so many police in all my life. Straight away we knew something very serious had happened."
Another local said: "Police have been here all night and they were asking residents if they saw what happened. It's really scary this happening right on your doorstep."
A third resident added: "All we know is that a woman died. I believe it happened on the road outside one of the flats. Police haven't told us anything else. It's really worrying."
Officers have been going door-to-door making enquiries and cops have been asking around the local shops for CCTV footage from around the time of the incident. Forensic officers in white boiler suits were seen combing the scene on Tuesday afternoon.
Over 24 hours later, the large area around several flats at St Mungo Avenue was still sealed off with uniformed officers seen standing guard. Cops were diverting local residents and students around the outside of the cordon.
The incident happened near Alfy's Paper Shope Townheed, which was the home of Navid's corner shop in the hit BBC comedy Still Game.
A local shopkeeper told the Record: "We just saw the police arriving at around 1pm and they quickly closed everything off. Officers were here right through the night and they were in asking us all about CCTV. They told us a woman had died but couldn't give us any more information. Our customers have been quite shaken up by the whole thing."
At around 1pm on Wednesday, the Police Scotland helicopter was seen flying near the scene, which is just a short walk from both Buchanan Street Bus Station and Queen Street railway station in the city centre.
No arrests have yet been made following the incident. Police say they are still treating the woman's death as unexplained and their enquiries are ongoing.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We were called around 12.55pm on Tuesday, October 29, to a report of a disturbance in the St Mungo Avenue area of Glasgow. Emergency services attended and a woman was found seriously injured. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
“Officers remain at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
