Meghan Markle and Harry's 'real reason' for buying new £6.5million Portugal home was revealed in Spare

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly purchased a luxury mansion in Portugal, leading to speculation that the Duke and Duchess are attempting to 'pretend they're still royals'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly splashed out on a luxurious new residence in Portugal, causing quite the buzz among Royal enthusiasts. Some suggest the move is an attempt to "pretend they're still royals," yet it appears the decision is deeply personal for the Sussexes.

The couple has allegedly secured a lavish property on the Iberian coast, which might also provide them with a "Golden Visa" for hassle-free movement within the EU's Schengen area. With a hefty £6.5 million price tag, this home could indeed be their golden pass into the EU.

Reports of this extravagant house purchase emerged shortly after the Duke and Duchess had to relinquish Frogmore Cottage to King Charles, after deciding to step back from Royal duties. Despite suggestions that they're trying to maintain a Royal facade, Royal commentator Angela Levin has revealed what she believes to be the "real reason" behind their Portuguese home purchase, which Harry explained in his explosive memoir 'Spare'.

Contrary to the claims of keeping up royal pretences, it seems the pair may be seeking proximity to the Royal who Meghan regards as her "sister," as mentioned in Harry's memoir 'Spare'. Speaking to GB News, Angela said: "Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank [are] there and in Harry's book, Spare, he said Meghan and Eugenie are like sisters."

However, she expressed some doubt, noting: "I'm not quite sure of that because in August [Princess Eugenie] said she wants to come back to the UK because she wants to give the children an English education and she wants to be with the family."

"Is that a way they (the Sussexes) can go around various countries in Europe and pretend that they're still royals again? I don't think there's anything positive about that."

Commenting on the matter, Ms Levin pointed out that Portugal offers "sea and sand", but highlighted Meghan has that "on her doorstep" in California, where she lives with Harry and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Eugenie and Jack are said to be enjoying their life an hour south of Lisbon at the luxurious Costa Terra Golf and Ocean Club, reports from The Express suggest. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, who share a warm relationship with Eugenie and Jack, were rumoured last year to have flown to Portugal for a romantic escape after the Invictus Games, reportedly travelling from Dusseldorf to Lisbon, then onward to Melides.

At that juncture, speculation was rife that Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank played hosts to the Sussexes. This account was seemingly confirmed by Jose Santos, chief of the Alentejo Tourism Board, per a Daily Mail article, which acknowledged the presence of Harry and Meghan in the area.

The Sussexes' luxurious residence is a Tuscan-style villa located in Montecito, equipped with amenities that include seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, as well as a cinema, gym, and library.

The couple's former UK home, Frogmore Cottage, was gifted to them by the late Queen in 2018, although it technically belongs to the Crown Estate. However, after Prince Harry's tell-all book 'Spare' was published, King Charles took back the property from the Sussexes, following reports that Prince Andrew had declined the opportunity to move from Royal Lodge to Frogmore Cottage.

In August, it was reported that Princess Eugenie and her husband were considering a permanent move back to the UK as their children neared school age. A source disclosed: "Jack's company doing so well makes it easier for them to head back to England on a more permanent basis."

"They [the family] are currently spending a lot of time in Portugal and as the boys get a bit older, they are looking for kindergartens near to their London home and eventually schools in the UK."
