Disney's Rivals starring Scots star David Tennant available to stream now

The brand new drama, set in the 80s is based on Dame Jilly Cooper's 1998 novel and is available to stream on Disney+ now.

The brand new 80s-set drama Rivals starring David Tennant is now available to stream on Disney+ from today.

The eight-part Star Original series rated 18+ was released on October 18 and is based on Dame Jilly Cooper's 1988 novel.

The cast of the 2024 drama, which is said to be full of 'romantic entanglements, dastardly deals, sex and wit' boasts some huge names alongside Scots Doctor Who star David Tennant. These include Alex Hassell, Danny Dyer, Emily Atack, Katherine Parkinson and Aidan Turner.

The show is briefly summarised on the streaming platform, where it reads: "Rivals" dives headfirst into the cutthroat world of TV where hair-dos are big and ambitions are even bigger. Deals are brokered in boardrooms, as well as bedrooms.

"With every man and woman out only for themselves, can true love really blossom in this highly anticipated adaptation of Jilly Cooper's best-selling Rutshire Chronicles novel?"

Rivals follows the intense rivalry between ex-Olympic rider and Conservative MP Rupert Campbell-Black, portrayed by Alex Hassell and David Tennant who plays TV station controller Lord Tony Baddingham in fictional Rutshire. Poldark star Aidan Turner features as journalist and TV host Declan O'Hara, who becomes caught up in the long-standing feud between Rupert and Tony.

Speaking to Radio Times about Rivals, Turner said: "It’s a lot of fun. I went to a screening last week [and] people loved it. It’s bold and it’s naughty and it’s a lot of fun."

When asked about his experience working alongside David Tennant, he replied: "It was great, David’s brilliant – he’s a real pro. It was a lot of fun to do."

The first season of Rivals contains eight episodes and is available to stream on Disney+ now. Those without a membership to the streaming giant can join from just £4.99 a month for the Standard with Ads plan.
