According to the NHS, millions of people in the UK have arthritis or other similar conditions that impact the joints.

The NHS states that arthritis is a prevalent condition that leads to pain and swelling (inflammation) in the joints. The health body explains that although the primary treatments for arthritis include lifestyle changes like exercise, physiotherapy, and medication, there is no cure, and surgery may be necessary in severe cases.

However, there are additional steps you can take to alleviate your symptoms, such as changing your diet, reports the Surrey Live.

TikTok nutritionist @drelmohandess revealed that adding a specific food to your diet can help reduce pain and swelling that comes with arthritis.

"One of the best natural remedies for arthritic pain and swelling is extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as it has a compound called oleocanthal that has been scientifically proven to block the same inflammatory pathway as certain medicines like ibuprofen without any of the side effects," he said.

The nutritionist suggested incorporating a "couple of tablespoons into your meals daily," which could be an easy solution to alleviate symptoms.

As noted by arthritis.org, extra virgin olive oil "has been researched for its protective effects in inflammatory autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus."

The website further explained: "Human, animal and lab experiments have shown that the polyphenols in EVOO effectively combat inflammation and improve arthritis symptoms in joints and throughout the body.

"Some experts believe EVOO is the primary reason the Mediterranean diet helps prevent a host of chronic diseases, although the exact amount required for effectiveness has not been determined."

The site also clarified myths regarding the shelf life of extra virgin olive oil, cautioning that it can spoil under specific conditions.

It "shouldn't be refrigerated" but can "start to go rancid when exposed to light and air." They recommended purchasing "small amounts that you can use within a month or two of opening."
