An air ambulance was forced to land on the M11 amidst a significant 'police incident', causing severe traffic congestion stretching for miles.

The incident, which occurred around 9.09am, led to the closure of the southbound carriageway of the Essex motorway on Friday morning, with drivers seen exiting their vehicles. Delays exceeding an hour have been reported in the area. Motorists are being advised to avoid this section of the motorway and follow diversions where possible, reports the Mirror.

The delays have affected slip roads around Stansted, extending travel times to and from the airport. A 10.30am update from National Highways suggested that the disruption is "expected to clear" between 12.30pm and 12.45pm.

Traffic has now been released on the northbound carriageway, but motorists can still expect delays of up to 60 minutes. An earlier post on the National Highways website read: "The M11 is closed southbound between J8 (Stansted) and J7A (Harlow) due to an ongoing Essex Police led incident. The northbound is carriageway is currently held to allow the air ambulance to land at the scene.

"At this stage it is not known how long the carriageway will be closed for. Plans are being made to clear the traffic caught within the closure, please await instructions from officers on scene."

Essex Police said: "The M11 is currently closed in both directions between junctions 7 and 8 due to a serious collision. This is also impacting slip roads around Stansted Airport. Emergency services are working at the scene. Please avoid the area."

Motorists are being hit with delays as diversion routes are set up, with traffic officers urging road users to look out for the Hollow Square symbol to navigate around the gridlock.
