Wife sliced husband's penis off years after spotting 'red flag' on wedding night

WARNING: DISTRESSING DETAILS - Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husband John Wayne Bobbitt's penis with a butcher's knife in 1993 - and has since claimed that she saw 'red flags' in their relationship hours after they married

A woman who infamously severed her husband's manhood with a carving knife revealed she had noticed "red flags" just hours into their marriage.

The notorious case of Lorena Bobbitt, who went on trial for cutting off her spouse's penis in 1993, is dissected in ITV's documentary, 'I Cut Off His Penis: The Truth Behind The Headlines. ' The programme explores this incident alongside other similar international cases, spotlighting the USA.

It details how Lorena, once a nail technician at a beauty parlour, assaulted her husband John on June 23, 1993. Following the act, she drove away with the appendage before discarding it out the car window.

In a turn that has since become medical and media legend, police found the penis in a field, preserved it in a hotdog box filled with ice, which allowed surgeons to successfully reattach it after a gruelling nine-hour surgery.

Lorena, who was 24 at the time, alleged that the brutal act followed her husband John Wayne Bobbit's rape of her. She claims to have first sensed danger on their wedding night, saying that only a month into their union he started to physically assault her, reports the Mirror.

The Venezuela-born Lorena recounted, "He was very nice, very charming, very kind and I just fell in love with him. He had these beautiful blue eyes and I just thought this guy is very attractive, like a poster guy for the Marines."

"Coming from a Catholic background, I never had any boyfriends before. Like I said, I was very young. I was very naive. He was my first love. It was just so innocent and so natural. So yes, it did move quite fast."

John popped the question to Lorena after discovering a ring at the bottom of a swimming pool, and they tied the knot shortly after she turned 20. However, Lorena alleges that John disappeared for about three hours after their wedding reception to visit a strip club with his mates.

She stated: "I found out later that was going on. Those were red flags. Big red flags, right? But to me, the sense of being married meant a lot because God says divorce is not acceptable."

"It escalated to the point that I was raped. In a healthy relationship, yes, you have arguments - not to the point where your husband beats you up or rapes you."

Four years after their wedding, Lorena claims that she was working in the salon until 8pm before heading home and falling asleep. She claimed she was in a semi-conscious state when she discovered John on top of her. "I was like 'what's going on here? ' That's all I remember," she expressed.

"I recall getting a glass of water. I don't remember seeing the knife. I don't remember any of that."

She insists she has no recollection of severing his private parts.

On 22 January 1994, Lorena Bobbitt was found not guilty due to temporary insanity by a jury and was sentenced to five weeks in a mental institution. Her ex-husband, former US Marine John, was acquitted of marital sexual assault and continues to deny any allegations of abuse.
