Met Office issues double yellow wind warning for Scotland as 70mph gales to batter country

It's looking like it will be a blustery weekend for a lot of the country.

by · Daily Record

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather wind warnings across Scotland this weekend as fierce winds of up to 70mph are likely to cause 'disruption'.

The first warning, between Friday (October 18) beginning at 7am and set to end at 3pm that day, will affect regions in Strathclyde and Highland & Eilean Siar. Strong south to south easterly winds are expected across western Scotland with gusts of up to 60mph on Friday morning into the early afternoon, before easing and turning south westerly later in the day.

Between 3am on Sunday October 20 and 12pm on Monday October 21, a second yellow wind alert has been put in place across the entire country and much of the UK. Gusts of 50-60 mph are possible in some inland areas, especially in west Scotland and Northern Ireland, with potential to reach 60-70 mph along exposed coasts and hills.

The Met Office states: "Winds will then likely turn south westerly, with a period of especially strong winds possible during Sunday afternoon and evening in western Scotland where gusts could potentially reach 70-80 mph in exposed areas, and more generally 55-65 mph in other parts of the warning area. These strong winds in conjunction with high spring tides may cause some disruption."

Meteorologists advise that delays to road, air and ferry transport are likely with coastal routes and communities expected to be affected by spray and/or large waves.

Homeowners should also be prepared to protect your property as it could cause damage to your house and others. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include; bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences.

Short term loss of power may also occur with people being warned to prepare in advance by gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.

For those on the coast, it's been advised to stay aware of large waves during the stormy weather to ensure your safety. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.

Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The Met Office has urged people to keep up to date with their local forecast as weather warnings are likely to quickly change.
