Stirling braced for strong winds as Storm Ashely gets set to arrive

Stirling will experience strong winds over the weekend as Storm Ashely could bring disruption to buildings, power supplies and the region's transport links.

Stirling is bracing for strong winds as Storm Ashely blows in over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for a spell of strong winds, which could cause disruption throughout most of Sunday.

The warning is in place between 3am and midnight.

The Met Office says that the storm could bring widespread disruption, including damage to buildings, power cuts may occur, some roads and bridges may close and road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected.

A Met Office forecaster said: "Storm Ashley will bring a windy period across the whole of the UK on Sunday and into Monday, and there is an increased chance of disruption across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England and northwest Wales.

"Initially a period of strong south to southeasterly winds will likely develop through Sunday morning, with gusts of 50-60mph possible in some inland areas, especially Northern Ireland and western Scotland, and perhaps up to 60-70mph along exposed coasts and hills.

"Winds will then turn southwesterly, with a period of especially strong winds possible during Sunday afternoon and evening across western Scotland where gusts could potentially reach 70-80mph in exposed areas, and more generally 55-65mph in other parts of the warning area. These strong winds in conjunction with high spring tides and large waves may cause some disruption."

The yellow warning is in place for Stirling, Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, Perth and Kinross, Angus, Dundee and Fife. The warning also extends to parts of Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Strathclyde, Orkney and Shetland, southwest Scotland, Lothian Borders, northwest England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
