Tributes have been pouring in for the late Peter Cormack after the former Liverpool midfielder passed away aged 78 - and he's set to get a big sendoff at Firhill on Saturday afternoon.

The Anfield club confirmed the sad news on Friday morning after Cormack, who battled dementia in his later years, died on Thursday night. He had a storied career, starting at Hibs where he spent seven years from 1963 before moving down south to Nottingham Forest. From there, he joined Liverpool, where he played a starring role in Bill Shankly's famous side, and later played for Bristol City, his boyhood Hibs, and Partick Thistle - the latter of whom he went on to manage.

Cormack played nine times for Scotland and, after retiring, also managed Anorthosis FC, Botswana, Cowdenbeath and Greenock Morton. A Liverpool tribute read: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of former midfielder Peter Cormack, aged 78. Rest in peace, Peter."

He played more than 200 times over his two spells at Hibs, and a club statement read: "Everyone at Hibernian FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former Hibee Peter Cormack at the age of 78. Rest in peace, Peter."

Partick Thistle, who Cormack managed between 1980 and 1984, are set to have a pre-match tribute to their former manager before Saturday's game with Falkirk. They said: "Everyone at Partick Thistle FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former manager and player Peter Cormack. Our thoughts are with Peter’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.

"A full tribute will follow, including details of how supporters can pay their respects at tomorrow’s game. Rest in peace, Peter. Once a Jag, always a Jag."

Nottingham Forest said: "We are saddened to learn of the passing of our former player, Peter Cormack. Peter played for Forest between 1970 and 1972, playing 87 times for the Club. Our thoughts go out to Peter's friends, family and loved ones at this sad time."

One of Cormack's former teammates at Anfield, Phil Thompson, wrote: "Another sad day for the Liverpool family, so sad to hear of the passing of my ex teammate Peter Cormack. Made my full debut alongside him and guided me through a tough game vs Norwich .Condolences to all his family YNWA RIP Pete."
