A killer who brutally stomped his tiny baby son to death shouted surprising final words when he was dying at his death row execution.

Travis Mullis, 38, murdered his three-month-old son 16 years ago. He was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday after he waived his right to appeal his death sentence.

Mullis' execution is one of five scheduled in the US within a seven-day period. He was declared dead at 7.01pm at a state penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas. In his final moments, his last words were to thank his supporters.

While strapped to the death chamber gurney, he said: "I'd like to thank everyone ... that accepted me for the man I became during my best and worst moments."

In his final words, Mullis also thanked prison staff and officials for "changes made across the system" that allowed "even the men on death row to show it is possible to be rehabilitated and not deemed a threat and not the men we were when we came into this system."

He further stated that he did not regret hastening his execution process by waiving his right to appeal. However, he expressed remorse for killing his son and apologised to his son's mother, reports the Mirror US. He ended by stating he bore no resentment towards those executing him and said: "It was my decision that put me here."

Ahead of Mullis' execution on Tuesday, his legal team were preparing for eleventh-hour appeals to try to stop the execution. His lawyer Shawn Nolan issued a statement on Tuesday, asserting that Texas would be executing a "redeemed man", stating Mullis has consistently accepted responsibility for killing his son.

The lethal injection was delayed by about 20 minutes as technicians struggled to find a suitable vein for the IV. This marked the fourth execution carried out by Texas this year, with Mullis' execution being one of two taking place in the county as Missouri executed convicted murderer Marcellus Williams on Tuesday following the US Supreme Court's denial of his appeal.

Two more executions are slated for this week in Oklahoma and Alabama. South Carolina executed Khalil Divine Black Sun Allah, formerly known as Freddie Owens, on Friday.
