Young man dies in Nottinghamshire M1 crash as police arrest man

The collision involved a car and a lorry and forced a 12-hour closure of the southbound side of the motorway

A man has died in a crash on the M1 in Nottinghamshire which saw the motorway close for most of the day. Emergency services were called to a collision between a lorry and a car south of Junction 27 at 4.04am this morning (Saturday, September 21).

Nottinghamshire Police said a 27-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers arrested a 47-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drug-driving.

He has been bailed pending further inquiries. The M1 southbound remained shut between junctions 26 and 27 for 12 hours while investigations took place and was covered in our traffic and travel blog here.

Detective constable Christopher Taylor said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with this man’s family and his loved ones at an incredibly distressing time. They are being supported by specially trained officers.
