Coronation Street viewers are convinced that they've worked out the 'true' identity of Betsy Swain's mother, with many suggesting that it isn't DS Lisa Swain

Coronation Street fans think they've cracked the mystery of Betsy Swain's real mum - and it's not DS Lisa Swain. The character, played by Sydney Martin, arrived on the cobbles earlier this year as the daughter of DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers).

It was revealed that Lisa's wife and Betsy's mum, Becky, had tragically died while on duty, leading to a strained relationship between Betsy and Lisa. Betsy has been quick to cause chaos.

She got involved with the evil solicitor Joel Deering (Calum Lill), who she blackmailed before he threatened her, leaving her scared. Viewers will remember that Joel is guilty of grooming and abusing young girls, including Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) who went missing.

Lauren eventually returned, exposing Joel's true colours to the community. However, despite being sentenced to prison for his horrific actions, Joel vanished from Weatherfield last week.

This week, the police, led by Lisa Swain, concluded that Joel had taken his own life, according to the Liverpool Echo. Furthermore, in Monday's episode (October 7), Lisa found the vile messages exchanged between Betsy and Joel - with Joel threatening to end the teenager's life, reports Plymouth Live.

But now, viewers are convinced that neither Lisa Swain nor Becky are Betsy's biological mother.

Coronation Street fans have been speculating that a former favourite could be set to return as the real mother of a current character. Fans on a Corrie Facebook fan page have been discussing the possibility that DS Swain is Betsy's biological mum, with one user suggesting: "No, Becky McDonald! ! " Becky, played by Katherine Kelly, was a popular character on the soap from 2006 to 2012, and was known for her dramatic storylines and relationships.

She left the show in 2012, but fans are now wondering if she could be set to return. One fan commented: "I've said it all along... 'Becky' is actually Becky McDonald. They all look so similar."

Another added: "Now this would be a plot twist."
