How Nottingham Forest boss Nuno has masterminded 'very positive' start to Premier League season

Nuno Espirito Santo's Nottingham Forest have made a strong start to the Premier League season

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactical masterclasses have been key to Nottingham Forest’s promising start to the season, according to summer signing Morato.

The Reds have already claimed some impressive results in the opening months of the Premier League campaign, including beating Liverpool at Anfield and drawing with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just before the international break. They will be aiming to build on those solid foundations when they return to action at home to Crystal Palace on Monday.

Nuno has placed an emphasis on being tough to break down, and as a result Forest have one of the tightest defences in the division. Morato has played his part in that, coming off the bench to help see out some big results in the three substitute appearances he has made since making the switch from Benfica.

“It's a very positive start, mainly due to our ability to defend well and counterattack,” the centre-back told Portuguese publication Record. “The game here in England is very fast-paced and if we give players like (Mo) Salah or (Cole) Palmer space to think and run, it becomes difficult.

“We have tactical flexibility and, in my opinion, an intelligent and effective strategy of pressing quickly after losing possession. This has worked.”

Pushing on was always going to be the Reds’ goal this term after successive relegation battles following their return to the top tier. They want to be looking up rather than over their shoulders this time around.

In the longer-term, Morato is positive some silverware can be added to the club’s trophy cabinet. Indeed, it was Forest’s rich history and the lure of playing in English football that convinced the 23-year-old to leave Benfica after five years in Portugal.

“Playing in the best league in the world is an interesting step in my career. When I was a child, I grew up watching great games, like those in this championship. Being here is a dream come true.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to wear this jersey, to play for such a historic club. It is a club with a lot of history in England, two-time European champions, that plays in the biggest league in the world and that attracts everyone's attention. I hope to give something back to the fans, I feel very honoured.

"You can expect a caring player, who wants to win and is here to help and contribute. I hope to achieve several victories, that everything goes well and, who knows, that I can help the club win trophies, because it deserves it.”
