Temperatures are predicted to drop below freezing this weekend, with a light dusting of snow forecast for higher ground. Weather maps suggest that small areas, including the Scottish Highlands and parts of the Lake District, will see a covering of snow by around 6am on Sunday.

The mercury in these areas is expected to plummet to as low as -2C on Sunday morning due to an icy northerly wind bringing colder air from the Arctic. However, forecasters predict that a new Jetstream will arrive later next week, bringing an abrupt end to the cold snap.

By Thursday, temperatures could reach 20C in Norfolk. Light flurries of snow are expected across the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District and the Outer Hebrides on Sunday, but disruption is highly unlikely.

It'll be a chilly start across the UK on Sunday, with 3C forecast in Birmingham at 6am, and 5C in London. As the day progresses, it will warm up slightly, reaching around 8C in Birmingham and 10C in London.

Belfast should see 7C and Bristol 11C by the afternoon. Rain is expected to sweep in from the west, making landfall across Northern Ireland by around 4pm, reports the Mirror.

It'll then move west, reaching parts of Scotland by around 7pm. Showers are expected throughout Sunday evening in Merseyside and the surrounding area.

The Met Office states: "Sunday and Monday should remain bright for most, though a few showers are possible."

In its long-range forecast, from Tuesday, October 15 to Thursday, October 24, it notes: "With winds from a southerly direction at first, temperatures will likely trend above average, with some warm conditions possible at times, but perhaps returning closer to average later in the week as winds become turn more toward the west."

This forecast follows previous predictions that several areas would experience light snowfall in the coming days, as reported by The Mirror last week. A meteorologist had warned that the harsh Arctic wind would likely bring small amounts of snow.
