Andrew Garfield Would ‘100 Percent’ Return as Spider-Man Despite Worrying That ‘No Way Home’ Would Be the ‘Worst Thing in the World’

Garfield led the superhero franchise in 2012 with “The Amazing Spider-Man" and 2014’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2” before reprising the role for the 2021 multiverse mash-up Marvel installment.

It’s been 10 years since Andrew Garfield led a standalone “Spider-Man” film, and the actor is ready to re-don the costume.

Garfield told Esquire in the below video that he would “100 percent” return to the character after leading 2012’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” and 2014’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Garfield briefly reprised the role for multiverse mash-up film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in 2021, alongside fellow Spideys Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland.

“For sure, I would 100 percent come back if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into,” the “We Live in Time” actor said. “I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

Garfield continued, “I came playing the character with a lot of fandom in my blood. I’m just a huge fan of that character and I’ve said it countless times: As long as I honored the essence of the character, I got to bring my soul. I think in every single Spider-Man fan, there lives that particular spider soul. I was like, ‘OK, just let my Spider-Man soul come through. I can’t judge, I’ve just got to let it rip.'”

Yet despite his love of the character, Garfield was skeptical about how “No Way Home” would pull off having a trio of Spider-Men onscreen. In fact, Garfield worried that “No Way Home” could be “the worst thing in the world” for the franchise.

“I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that to him,” Garfield said. “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in, I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom. Me and Tobey could just come in and be like, ‘Everyone is going to be happy to see us!’ It was the best.”

Garfield told IndieWire that even though Marvel CEO Kevin Feige confirmed a fourth “Spider-Man” installment with Holland as the lead, Garfield will not be back for that film.
