Toronto police are investigating after shots were fired from one vehicle at another, causing a crash and rollover that sent two people to hospital on Monday morning.

Officers were called to the Yonge Street and Empress Avenue area in North York at around 10:44 a.m. after reports of shots fired from a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck at a Kia.

In an update, police said the incident started when the Dodge Ram rear-ended the Kia at Willowdale and Cummer avenues.

The Dodge Ram then reportedly followed the Kia to Willowdale and Bishop avenues. That’s where police say an occupant in the pickup fired a shot at the Kia.

The Kia then travelled south on Yonge Street where it was involved in a collision and flipped over while being followed by the Dodge.

Investigators say an occupant of the pickup fired another shot at the Kia before fleeing southbound on Yonge.

A man and woman in the Kia, its only occupants, suffered injuries as a result of the collision, not the shooting, police noted.

Their injuries are serious but non-life-threatening.

Police are calling it a “complex investigation” that is ongoing.

No motive has been established.

Police closed affected streets for several hours, but are now in the process of reopening them.
