A man from Bristol was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault at the Liberal Democrat party conference. The 57-year-old was arrested after a report of inappropriate touching at The Grand Hotel in Brighton around midnight on Tuesday, September 17, Sussex Police have said.

He has been released without charge. However, a spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats confirmed that he has been suspended the man from the party while its complaints procedure is ongoing.

On Wednesday, September 18, a Sussex Police spokesman stated that inquiries had been completed, including a review of CCTV footage and witness accounts.

The force added that they were in communication with the woman and that the man was interviewed under caution. The police later released him with no further action to be taken.

Inspector Dan Eagle said: "Sussex Police are committed to tackling reports of sexual assaults and violence against women and girls. Officers took robust action in investigating this incident. It has been concluded, pending any further information coming to light."

A Lib Dem spokesman said: "We were horrified to hear of this incident and assisted the police in swiftly identifying and arresting this man. He remains suspended from the party and this case will now be assessed under our independent complaints process."
