Hand luggage rules at UK airport ditched 'with immediate effect'

The new rule could make a big difference to your next holiday

A UK airport has scrapped a frustrating airport security rule. Bournemouth Airport has introduced new screening equipment, allowing passengers to keep laptops and liquids of up to 100ml in their hand luggage.

The updated system means travellers are no longer required to separate these items and place liquids in a clear plastic bag for scanning. According to airport officials, the change aims to enhance passenger security.

This development comes ahead of Jet2's launch of 16 new routes from the airport next year, reported Birmingham Live. In a statement, the airport announced: "Bournemouth Airport has completed the process of installing and testing new security screening equipment to improve passenger security.

"For hand luggage this means that with immediate effect, passengers flying from Bournemouth Airport can now leave liquids and large electrical items such as laptops in their cabin baggage. Passengers flying from Bournemouth Airport will no longer need to present liquids separately in a clear plastic bag however, liquids are still restricted to containers of up to 100ml.

"As many airports have not yet introduced this new technology, passengers should check restrictions prior to travel as, they may still be required to carry liquids within a clear plastic bag for the return journey back to Bournemouth Airport."

Bristol Airport permits passengers to leave liquids, laptops and electronics inside their baggage while walking through security. According to the airport's website, passengers are advised that only liquids, pastes, gels, and pastes in containers up to 100ml can be carried in hand luggage, while larger items must be checked in.

Any items exceeding the 100ml limit in hand luggage will be removed and destroyed. However, there is no limit on the number of containers under 100ml that can be carried. During security searches, passengers must keep liquids and electrical items in their hand luggage. However, all items must be removed from pockets, including phones, keys, coins, and tissues, while watches can be left on.
