Urgent red flood warnings issued around the Bristol area as Storm Ashley approaches
The arrival of Storm Ashley is expected this weekend
by Alex Driscoll · BristolLiveBristol and the surrounding area has been hit with 14 urgent red flood alerts ahead of the arrival of Storm Ashley this weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind tomorrow, Sunday, October 20, from 3am until 11.59pm and covers Scotland, parts of the north-west of England, and the length of the west coast of Wales.
The Environment Agency has listed flood alerts for various places surrounding Bristol, including in coastal areas across North Somerset. This is due to the storm bringing rain during the early part of Sunday, where there is a predicted 95 percent chance of it occurring.
The flood alerts affect a range of rivers including the Avon, Severn Estuary and the River Frome. The flood alerts issued affect areas around Bristol as well as areas of the city itself.

- Flood warning affecting Avonmouth and Portbury
- Bristol Frome, Ladden Brook, River Trym and tributaries between Chipping Sodbury and Tytherington to Bristol Floating Harbour and the Bristol Avon
- Rivers Brue, Sheppey, Glastonbury Millstream and North and South Drains
- Little Avon River and other rivers and streams in the Vale of Berkeley
- Mid River Avon and tributaries including Melksham and Bradford on Avon
- Rivers in North Somerset including Congresbury Yeo, Cheddar Yeo, Axe and tributaries
- River Chew from Chew Stoke to Keynsham, Chew Stoke Stream and Winford Brook
- Severn Estuary at Oldbury-on-Severn, Northwick and Avonmouth including Aust and Old Passage
- Severn estuary from Gloucester to Sharpness, including Sandhurst and Maisemore
- Coastline between Gullhouse Point and Marine Parade
- Coastline between Portishead Point and Avonmouth
- River Frome and Mells, and the Whatley and Nunney Brooks and tributaries
- Tidal River Avon from Sea Mills to Conham in Bristol and between the Avonmouth Bridge and Shirehampton Park including Pill and Shirehampton
- Upper River Avon and tributaries including Malmesbury, Dauntsey, Chippenham and Calne
- Wye Estuary in Gloucestershire
The weather forecast for the south west today is skies brightening through the morning with plenty of sunshine developing. Patchy cloud will arrive through the afternoon with sunny periods and perhaps the odd shower. It will feel mild in the sunshine with a light westerly breeze. The maximum temperature will be 16°C.
Tomorrow, October 20, there will be rain at times during the morning, perhaps heavy in places. It will turn drier and brighter throughout the day with the odd shower. It will also be windy with coastal gales at times, but will stay mild. The maximum temperature will be 17°C.
