The former president of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) will be sentenced next month, after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenager.

67-year-old Gerry O'Mahony of Murphy Place, Abbeyside, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, was convicted after a week-long trial in Waterford Circuit Court.

O’Mahony was in his 50s when he sexually assaulted the woman who was 19 at the time.

The woman chose to retain her right to anonymity but told Waterford Circuit Criminal Court, through her counsel, that the perpetrator could be named.

O’Mahony, of 59 Murphy Place, Abbeyside, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, had been charged with sexually assaulting the young woman on a date unknown between January 1st, 2009, and December 31st, 2010.

The jury of 10 men and two women returned a unanimous guilty verdict on Wednesday at Waterford Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Eugene O'Kelly thanked them for their service.

“I know it’s been a difficult case,” he said to them. He excused them from further jury service for five years.
