The Taoiseach is to meet the prime minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, at Government Buildings on Friday.

Prime minister Mikati is travelling to Ireland specifically for the meeting following his attendance at an international conference in Paris hosted by President Macron in support of Lebanon's people and sovereignty.

As the Irish Examiner reports, Simon Harris will express his deep concern about the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Lebanon, and particularly the attacks on civilians in densely populated areas.

He will express the sympathies of the Irish people on the loss of life and the level of destruction taking place.

The Taoiseach will emphasise Ireland's continuing support and solidarity in seeking to bring about a ceasefire based on the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

Continuing concerns for the safety of peacekeepers serving in UNIFIL and condemnation for the violation of international law will also be highlighted by the Taoiseach.
