A father-of-two who died following an assault on Monday night in Carlow town was known for his “big heart” mourners at his requiem mass heard this morning.

Darren Quigley, 30, from New Oak Estate, was discovered with serious injuries after gardaí responded to an incident at a house in the same estate shortly after 11.40pm.

Mr Quigley was treated at the scene before being taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny, where he was later pronounced dead.

Symbols of his life were presented during his requiem mass at 10am in the Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow town marking what was important to Mr Quigley.

His parents Michelle and Tony along with Mr Quigley’s brother Adam recounted what he meant to them.

Mrs Quigley said: “As a family we would like to thank you for your support through our very hard time this week. I know we can’t thank everyone individually, but there is one person we would like to thank very much and that is Pat Kehoe who was with Darren in his last few minutes on the night of his tragic accident. So as a family we really, really appreciate the support.”

His father Tony continued:”There is so much I want to say. For anyone who knew Darren knew how big his heart was and the jolly little cheeky smile he had. He had a good word to say about everybody. All he wanted to do was hunt and fish and live life in peace. The love he had for his children was unbelievable. The only woman he truly loved was his mother.”

Mr Quigley’s brother added: “My brother Darren, where can I start. He was always hard on me, preparing me for things. He had me up in Mammy and Daddy’s bedroom sparring. The memories I have of Darren I will have them forever. I thank everyone who has been there for us and for their kindness.”

Those close to the late father brought symbols of his boxing achievements by Mick and Connor and the congregation heard he was a very successful boxer in his youth, Colin and Lee presented his binoculars which represented his love for hunting, fishing was another great passion he had and Darren brought up a fishing rod.

Another sport Mr Quigley loved was GAA and Danny presented his football jersey, while Benjy and Elaine his godparents offered photos of his “precious” daughters and of his passion for outdoor life.

His coffin was adorned with a lily filled floral wreath and a photograph of Mr Quigley.

The celebrant told mourners that “this is an extremely tragic time” for his parents Tony and Michelle, daughters Ava and Erica, brother Adam, grandmother Agnes, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

He explained: “We are here for Darren and for you all. We ask the Lord for the best bed in heaven for Darren and comfort all of those who have lost him. Today this ceremony is for you. We are only human and make many mistakes.

"It is very hard to say anything due to the situation we are in. Darren was a young person who should be with us for a long time to come. Unfortunately Darren has been called by the Lord and there is no-one who can resist that call. It is that difficult time that none of us can escape. “However, not everything is lost, there is hope. While Darren’s earthly soul has died, his soul is still alive and the day will come when Darren will rise again."

Mourners heard: “God does not forget anyone who has been left behind and will be with you in the coming days. This mass is an invaluable help to Darren himself.

“Let us remember and pray for each other, especially for Darren and his loved ones. Let's take responsibility for each other and let's support each other. God will get you through these difficult times. Let's not stop praying for Darren and for each other.”

A woman, in her 30s, was arrested during a follow-up operation in Carlow town a short time later, involving local gardaí and the Armed Response Unit.

The woman has since appeared in court, charged with the murder of Mr Quigley.

Sabrina Kehoe, aged in her 30s, from St Mary’s Park, Carlow town, appeared at a special sitting of the local District Court on Wednesday night.

The court heard Ms Kehoe was arrested on Tuesday morning following the death of Mr Quigley outside a house on Market View in New Oak Estate.

A second person, Conor O’Brien from Oakley Park, Tullow Road, Carlow was charged with bringing weapons to a dispute.

The accused continue to be remanded in custody.

Mr Quigley’s remains were brought from the cathedral while a female soloist sang In the arms of the angels. He was later buried in St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow.
