Star batter Shimron Hetmyer has earned a recall to the West Indies' ODI squad for their highly anticipated three-match series against England, set to commence in Antigua on Thursday. Hetmyer, who last played in ODIs in December 2023, steps in for Alick Athanaze in the only change to the squad that recently returned from Sri Lanka.

Hetmyer’s absence from the Sri Lanka tour was due to personal reasons. However, he recently showcased his form in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), finishing fifth in the run-scorers tally. His return bolsters the West Indies' batting lineup as they prepare to take on a formidable England team, aiming to maintain their competitive edge after a 2-1 series victory against England last year.

The series will open at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, where fans are expected to provide a genuine home advantage. England, meanwhile, are led by Liam Livingstone, with regular captain Jos Buttler still recovering from a calf injury sustained in July.

Head coach Daren Sammy expressed excitement over the challenge England presents, emphasizing the long-standing rivalry between the two teams. “Playing against England always provides a new challenge and reignites a rivalry that the players and the people of the Caribbean are eager for,” Sammy said. “Somehow, we West Indies always find a way to raise our game when we face England.”

One of the series’ key storylines includes the promising debut of 17-year-old Jewel Andrew, who impressed at the tail end of the Sri Lanka tour. His presence alongside seasoned players like Hetmyer and the experienced captain Shai Hope promises a balanced combination of youthful energy and veteran leadership.

The second ODI will also take place in Antigua, with the final match scheduled for Barbados before the teams transition to a five-match T20I series hosted at Kensington Oval and the Daren Sammy National Stadium in St. Lucia.
