In Short

  • Gill was dismissed for an 8-ball duck in Chennai
  • Parthiv felt that it was an instinctive shot from Gill
  • This was Gill's third duck at home

Parthiv Patel felt that Shubman Gill was unlucky to get out for a duck on day one of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh on Thursday, September 19. Gill was dismissed by Hasan Mahmud as the Indian batter tried to play a ball down the leg side. Gill would get a bit of bat on the ball and it went straight into the hands of Litton Das.

Gill was part of the top order collapse for India as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were also dismissed for 6 runs each on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh. Speaking to JioCinema, Parthiv would analyse the dismissal and said it was an instinctive shot from Gill, as he was staying ahead of his popping crease to negate the seam and swing which was on offer.

"I think he was unlucky. When you get out down the leg side, it is a bit of an instinctive shot. His game plan is to stay ahead of the popping crease. He stays almost half ahead of the popping crease."

"He tries to negotiate that swing or seam, which a bowler is getting. But in cricket we say there are two unluckiest dismissals. One is to get run out at the non striker and or or you get out down the legside and caught behind and that's exactly what happened with Shubman Gill," said Parthiv.

You don't really leave that ball

Parthiv also said that a batter usually doesn't leave such a delivery down the leg side and felt the bat would just instinctively go there in an attempt to get a boundary.

"You don't really leave that ball. Once you see that ball going down the leg side, your bat instinctively goes there and sometimes you know if you get a slightly better part of the bat, you may get it to a boundary. But otherwise, this time I thought Shubman was unlucky that he got a faint edge," said Parthiv.

This was Gill's third duck at home this year, and he would join Virat Kohli in an unwanted list for India.
