Chris Martin shares Coldplay's retirement plan: Only going to do 12 albums

British pop band Coldplay recently announced that they will retire from making music albums after releasing their 12th studio album. The band's lead vocalist, Chris Martin, shared the news in an interview. Their 10th album will be released on October 4, 2024.

Chris Martin revealed in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that Coldplay would only release 12 studio albums before retiring. He said, "We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Having that limit means the quality control is so high right now and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great. And so where we could be coasting, we're trying to improve."

Chris Martin explained that the decision to limit Coldplay's discography to 12 albums was not arbitrary. Instead, it was inspired by some of the band's greatest musical influences. "There are only seven Harry Potters. There’s only 12 and a half Beatles' albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes", he explained.

As reported by NBC Times, Chris added, "To make an album great as a band, it’s such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their lives for themselves."

Coldplay consists of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion as the band members. They recently finished the European leg of their Music of the Spheres tour. They will perform in India on January 18, 19 and 21, 2025. The tickets for the much-hyped concert were sold out on September 22, 2024.
