Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the head coach of the England national football team, the Football Association confirmed on Wednesday, October 16. The former Chelsea boss becomes England's third foreign coach, following in the footsteps of Sweden's Sven-Goran Eriksson and Italy's Fabio Capello. Tuchel will be assisted by Englishman Anthony Barry and both men will start working from January 1, 2025.

Reports had emerged on Tuesday in British media that Tuchel had given his go-ahead to taking the job. Lee Carsley, the England Under-21 coach who took over temporarily after Gareth Southgate's resignation following England's loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, will remain in charge of the next two Nations League matches. Tuchel and Barry will officially begin their roles in January, ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

"We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world and Anthony Barry who is one of the best English coaches to support him," FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham said in a statement.

Tuchel, 51, is no stranger to English football, having guided Chelsea to the Champions League title in 2021. Before being dismissed by Chelsea in 2022, Tuchel also managed Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich, bringing a wealth of experience to his new role with the England team.

What Tuchel said after becoming England manager

Tuchel said that he is very proud of becoming the new England manager and had long felt a personal connection to the game in the country. The German tactician said that he finds the chance to work with the English players exciting.

“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already. To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."

"Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud. I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together,” said Tuchel.

England had recently got their Nations League campaign back on track with a 3-1 win over Finland.
