Jigra box office Day 1: Alia Bhatt's film opens at Rs 4 crore, can Dussehra help?

Alia Bhatt and Vedang Rana's Jigra opened in the range of Rs 4 crore nett in India. The film is a prison-break thriller and Dussehra is now expected to help grow the business on Saturday and Sunday.

Alia Bhatt's Jigra opened with a single-digit figure at the domestic box office. The film, directed by Vasan Bala, was expected to collect in the range of Rs 4-5 crore nett on its first day, and it did just the same. The thriller earned Rs 4.25 crore nett on Friday, reported the trade website Sacnilk.

The film, which marks the big Bollywood debut of Vedang Rana, received mixed reviews on Friday. However, it will be interesting to see if it manages to benefit from the Dussehra holiday weekend. Considering it is clashing at the box office with Rajkummar Rao's Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, and Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan, it's important for the film to witness some more positivity on social media.

The makers of Jigra promoted the film well across the country. However, despite Alia's towering screen presence, the film doesn't seem to have attracted enough audiences to theatres. This could be because of the genre, which is not generally considered a mass favourite in the absence of larger-than-life action.

Jigra is a prison-break thriller and while Alia's performance is undoubtedly remarkable, the audience would want more to flock to theatres during this festive weekend. On the contrary, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video seems to have gained more traction at the box office. The Raaj Shaandilyaa-directorial opened slightly higher than Jigra, and collected Rs 5 crore on Friday.

Considering the film is a family comedy-drama, it is more likely to gain from the Dussehra festivities.

Both the films have got a good three-week-long window to perform at the box office until the two big Diwali releases - Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 - hit the screens and create a rampage.
