  • WhatsApp's memory chat feature is under progress
  • It aims to record all necessary information shared with MetaAI
  • It aims to enhance customisation in the app

After Meta introduced Meta AI to WhatsApp, earlier this year, the go-to-messenger app keeps working to make it more user friendly. Starting with MetaAI to be used as personal assistant director from the application to making it available in Hindi as well, all the features have helped users make it easy with WhatsApp. And now, according to WABeta, it is working on a new feature called chat memory. The feature aims to record all necessary information conveyed to MetaAI, to better personalise the personal assistant. For instance, if the chat assistant knows that you are vegan, it will share recipes accordingly. However, this could also be the feature that requires boundaries. Currently, the feature is under progress and we have only limited information. Let's look at what this feature can do.

WhatsApp's chat memory feature

WhatsApp is looking into a new feature that allows Meta AI to automatically remember certain details previously shared with the chatbot, set to be released in a future update. This feature aims to provide users with more relevant and tailored responses based on the information Meta AI retains about their preferences. The AI will be capable of remembering various personal details, including dietary choices like veganism, birthdays, and individual preferences, such as a formal tone of conversation. Additionally, it can keep track of allergies and interests, including favourite books and a fondness for documentaries and podcasts.

This memory feature is designed to greatly improve the personalisation of Meta AI interactions. By retaining such information, Meta AI can provide recommendations, advice, and responses that better match the user's preferences and lifestyle. For instance, if a user requests food recommendations, Meta AI will avoid suggesting dishes that the user has previously stated they dislike or are allergic to. This degree of customisation fosters a more natural and engaging interaction, allowing Meta AI to function more like a personal assistant.

According to the report, users will have complete control over what Meta AI remembers, enabling them to update or delete specific information whenever they choose.

Concerns with memory tools

Previously, several companies pulled the "memory" aspect, similar to this. Microsoft created a feature called Recall, which was continuously bashed for hampering the personal space of the user. Similarly, Google released Pixel screenshots, a milder and sensible version of Recall. With Pixel screenshot, the company only allowed screenshots to be recorded. This way, the user has the power over which details to record. It is noteworthy that currently, the WABeta report also states that users will have the power to save what they want. However, it will only be witnessed after the feature is released.
