The family member of a patient at Kolkata's IPGMER SSKM Hospital was beaten with hockey sticks by a group of unidentified men who barged into facility on Sunday morning.

Sourav Modak, the son of a patient undergoing treatment at the hospital, was attacked by a group of 15-20 miscreants in front of the trauma care unit. Witnesses said the assailants, armed with hockey sticks and lathis, threw Modak to the ground and thrashed him ruthlessly.

Despite the presence of police personnel, they reportedly fled the scene, leaving Modak injured and in a pool of blood on the ground.

Hospital staff rushed to Modak's aid and admitted him to the trauma care unit. He is currently in critical condition with severe injuries to his head, scalp, hands, legs, and wrists. Doctors said he suffered broken bones in his arms and legs.

Modak told doctors he does not know his attackers and is traumatised by the incident.

The incident comes against the backdrop of protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city, where doctors and staff have raised concerns about the safety and security of medics after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in August.

Dr Bipresh Chakroborty, a junior doctor at SSKM, told India Today that the attack was reported to the police outpost located within the hospital, but no case has been filed so far.

Chakroborty further claimed that according to Modak, two on-duty police personnel at the trauma centre did not intervene when he was attacked.

Police sources, however, told India Today that a case is being lodged at Bhawanipur police station and CCTV footage is being examined to identify the assailants.
