Meet the car ruling sales chart in 2024. Not Maruti, Hyundai, Mahindra or Kia model

Do you remember the last time a Maruti Suzuki model was not the best-selling car in India in a year? For decades, the legendary 800 and Alto-maker has literally ruled the sales charts. But the story is very different in 2024 so far. In the first eight months, from January to August, the Tata Punch has driven past all the Maruti Suzuki models as well as the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra Scorpio and Tata Nexon to take the numero uno position.

According to data from the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and different companies, the Tata Punch is leading with sales of 142,072 units from January to August in 2024. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR is in second position with sales of 132,309 units. The Hyundai Creta has taken the third spot, clocking 125,460 units.

The Tata Punch is sold in India in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) avatars. To enhance their sales further during the festive season, Tata Motors recently announced price cuts on both versions.

The Tata Punch ICE was earlier priced between Rs 6.13 lakh and Rs 10.20 lakh (ex-showroom). It now comes in the price bracket of Rs 6.13 lakh to Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).

While the Tata Punch EV was earlier priced between Rs 10.99 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the price range now is Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 14.29 lakh (ex-showroom).

At the heart of the Tata Punch ICE is a 1.2-litre petrol engine (88PS and 115Nm) with 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT options. Also available is Punch CNG (73PS and 103Nm) with a 5-speed MT.

The Tata Punch EV is offered in a couple of guises -- 60kW motor (114Nm), 25kWh battery pack and 315km claimed range (MIDC), and 90kW motor (190Nm), 35kWh battery pack and 421km claimed range (MIDC).
